What Is the Highest Rated Wind Load That a Tubular Steel Carport Can Take?

Ensure your installation is protected from the elements

The Strength Is in the Geometry

Before we tell you just how fast winds can blow without damaging a Capital Steel Industries tube steel carport, it might help to explain why our tubular steel is as strong as it is. This will help you to understand how a structure that is so seemingly simple can withstand such powerful wind forces.

The tubular steel frames and supports used in the construction of our carports are made from 12-gauge, extruded steel tubing. This isn’t cylindrical tubing, either—this is square steel tubing, which makes a huge difference when it comes to strength.

Inferior carports use cylindrical steel tubing, which can bend and crease under much lighter loads. While these carports may be less expensive, they’re definitely not going to hold up to extreme weather conditions like a Capital Steel Industries square tube steel carport will.

When you factor in the buttressed design of the carport itself, the result is an exceptionally strong structure that will provide ongoing protection for decades. Granted, no tubular steel is going to be as strong as i-beam steel, but it often doesn’t need to be. For carports, square tubular steel is an economical, efficient choice.

Note: Keep in mind that Capital Steel Industries provides tubular steel carports that are certified, not engineered. Engineered metal buildings come with stamped engineering drawings that attest to the materials and their properties. Steel structure engineering and certification requirements for permitting vary from location to location; contact us to learn more.

How Strong Are We Talking, Here?

It’s time to get down to brass tacks. What is the highest-rated wind load that one of our tubular steel carports can take?

The answer is 160 miles-per-hour.

According to the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale, Capital Steel Industries tube steel carports are rated to withstand up to category four hurricane-force winds. That’s real strength you can rely on.

Even if your installation location isn’t in a known hurricane zone, it does give peace of mind knowing that your carport can take virtually all of what Mother Nature dishes out. And, because Capital Steel Industries offers tube steel carports of varying sizes, you can select just the right amount of coverage needed for a single car, multiple cars, or even a Class B RV (and an ATV or two).

Our tube steel carports are available in the following dimensions:

  • 20’ x 30’
  • 20’ x 40’
  • 12’ x 12’
